CHURCH OF SAINTS FELICE AND FORTUNATO

The Paleochristian architectonic complex of the Basilica stands today as shaped in the romanesque reconstruction of the 10th century, with large additions in the 13th century. The building stands on two previous edifices. The plan of the first building, known as the “ old basilica”, is outlined on the floor of the church with red Verona marble, whose mosaic floor dates back to the second half of the 4th century or the beginning of the 5th century. The second structure was built during the 5th century: it was larger, with three mosaiced aisles, a narthex and a quadriporticus. An important and still existing part of this edifice is the sacellum of S. Maria Mater Domini.

This Basilica became a centre of religious spread, mostly thanks to the deeds of the Benedictine monks who settled in the complex between the 8th and the beginning of the 9th century. Following the devastation caused by the Hungarians at the end of the 9th century, the Priest Rodolfo had it rebuilt during the 10th century. In 1117, another important restoration took place after the great damage caused by an earthquake. In the 15th century, the church was completely plastered, frescoed and renewed with the opening of larger windows and the construction of new trusses. In the 17th century, the monks modified the interior according to the dictates of the new artistic taste, eliminating the fifteenth-century works and building a new narthex outside. The restoration works, started in 1935 and continued until 1993, involved the removal of the baroque superstructures and have given back to the monumental complex all the elements needed to re-read the ancient religious and architectural history of the building.
