Contrà Santa Corona, 9
The elegant residence of the Da Monte family stands in front of the Dominican convent of Santa Corona. Built between 1550 and 1554, the structure is now universally attributed to Palladio, thanks to the examination of various autographic designs. The design is from 1540 or 32 when Andrea, still only in his early thirties, was analysing and reconsidering Sebastiano Serlio's architectural ideas.
The facade is divided into two longitudinal fascias: the first is dominated by radiating rustication around the entrance arch; the second by a central serlian window, two niche windows and four pairs of pilasters.
The inscription "BAPTISTA DE MONTE SANCTI FILIUS A. MDLXXXI" may be read on the band between one floor and the other, the date probably indicating the definitive completion of work in the year after Palladio's death. |
