Piazza Castello
Vincenzo Scamozzi built this section of the Palazzo Porto Breganze at the beginning of the 17th century following Palladio's plans.
Only two of the seven bays planned were actually built and the courtyard, if built, would have had an incredible exedra loggia.
The existing facade features three, enormous, Corinthian semi-columns. The capitals are decorated with rich festoons.
The design of the palace is undoubtedly one of the most important demonstrations of Palladio's artistic maturity, made after his third visit to Rome. "If the other five bays planned had been built, the facade would have magnetised the entire square and would have made the other buildings... act as architectural wings" (Remo Schiavo)
The original interior has, unfortunately, been completely changed over the years. |
