In 1595, The Arco delle Scalette was erected at Porta Monte. Palladio had designed it in about 1576, probably as access to the Marian Sanctuary of Monte Berico, reviving the Roman triumphal arch. Theis interpretation is related to the fact that the architect was also considered for the extensions to this 15th-century church and the arch would almost certainly have been the natural "trait-d'union" between the new basilica and the city.
It was constructed fifteen years after the architect's death on the request of the city "Capitano", Giacomo Bragadin, with the work being entrusted to Francesco Albanese.
It carries a depiction of the "Annunciation" by Orazio Marinali. |
