BASSANO DEL GRAPPA
Crossed by the river Brenta, Bassano del Grappa is one of the most densely-populated and well-developed town in Veneto. As well as fast-growing industrial economy and a lively cultural activity, Bassano possesses a fine gastronomic tradition: it is impossible to leave without having tasted the asparagues, dried cod and grappa (if possible at the Nardini distillery).
Standing in the central Monte Vecchio square are the impressive Palazzo del monte di pieta' and the Casa Dal Corno Bonato, the facade of which was frescoed by Jacopo da Ponte, known as il Bassano (his works are now conserved in the Museo Civico); a few steps away, in Piazza della Liberta', is the neoclassical church of San Giovanni built in the 1300s by the architect Giovanni Miazzi. The 15th century Loggia del Comune is also lovely. All the town is dotted with buildings of fine taste, enriched with prescious ornamentation; a walk through the quiet squares is most fascinating.
The pearl of Bassano is, however, its wooden bridge, designed by Palladio in this material as its flexibility would resist the raging Brenta river. It was damaged both by the river and by bombings, but it was always restored following the ideas of Palladio. The last restoration was in the second postwar period and it was due to the Alpine troops.

THE OLIERO CAVES
In the Brenta Valley in the municipal area of Valstagna, the Oliero springs are the most important water outlets of the Karst area of the Sette Comuni and the largest resurgence in a Karst region controlled by a natural siphon and flowing intermittently of Europe.
The fascinating cave park is crossed by a winding track, which leads to the ASSASSINS’ COVE and the SISTERS’ COVE; it seems that the former was inhabited in ancient times, which is witnessed by various tools that were found in the digs. They are watched over by enormous rocky faces which host a rich variety of rock flora, the most beautiful being the Rock Rampion. The track then leads down to the hollow between the two main caves, which is completely surrounded by the cool spring waters and the luxuriant centuries old trees. Very close by there is a low wide opening into the Siori Cove or Parolini Cave, from the name of the person who discovered it during his explorations in 1822.
The air temperature inside the cave is around 12°, while the water temperature is almost 9°, which remain constant throughout the year.
The Oliero Caves Park offers the following:
- A Natural Park with Nature Walk and illustrative panels (approx. 40 minutes).
- Parolini Cave, which can be visited with a guide in a boat (approx. 25 minutes). The temperature is around 12°.
- Other smaller caves along a track rich with centuries old vegetation.
- A play park for children, inn, refreshment room, tables and benches for picnics.
- Toilets at the entrance to the Park and near the Cave, and a large car park for cars and coaches.
