Villa Caldogno Nordera is ascribed to Andrea Palladio: it was built around 1545. This facade shows three central rusticated arches giving light to the loggia; at the top there is a triangular pediment. This structure resembles other Palladian works, such as Villa Pisani at Bagnolo and Villa Saraceno - The Landmark Trust.
The same facade shows the inscription "Angelo Calidonius Luschi Filius MDLXX". The year (1570) is very probably referred to the end of the works of decoration of the interiors ordered by the villa's new owner, Angelo Caldogno following Michele Caldogno who ordered the building.
Villa's rooms were frescoed by Gianantonio Fasolo, Battista Zelotti and by their helpers, in the si0teenth century. Whereas in the eighteenth century, Costantino Pasqualotto painted the decorations of the rooms at the right of the all.
Fasolo was able to rise above Zelotti whose works appear to be less powerful. The scenes of the hall represent knights and ladies reliving some moments of a model day: the play of cards, the dance or the concert, in the background of false architecture. The greater rooms on the left are frescoed with the stories of Scipios and Sophonisba. Whereas the small room shows some frescoed scenes of the Good Shepherd's story begun by a helper of Zelotti and ended by Giulio Carpioni. |
