WHITE ASPARAGUS FROM BASSANO DEL GRAPPA P.D.O.
The triumph of spring food, cooked in various ways, it is picked when it has not yet broken the earth; it has a characteristic white colour, at most with a tinge of pink, and is renowned for being particularly tender. In the area of Vicenza, white asparagus always finds a way of reigning supreme at the table, with rice as a modest, refined first course, “Risotto coi sparasi”, or in the typical Bassano dish, “Ovi e sparasi”, with the boiled vegetable served with a simple boiled egg based sauce. Production At present, production totals 150 quintals a year in the area of Bassano (this figure refers only to marketed asparagus), 65% of which is produced in the period between mid April and the first two weeks in May, over a cultivated area of 35 hectares.
Vespaiolo di Breganze wine
Breganze Vespaiolo Doc wine is a pleasure, and a perfect accompaniment to the asparagus.
Its name comes from the fact that wasps are attracted by the smell of the grapes and the high sugar content in the must. It is a white wine, with a clear, straw yellow colour that has greenish tinges when young. It has a particularly intense fragrance, with hints of ripe fruit and almond. To the palate it shows enviable freshness thanks to its natural, distinct acidity. It has good aromatic persistence and shows an interesting predisposition for ageing. When the wine is a few years old, the colour darkens, and the wine takes on a fragrance with hints of quince and pleasant mineral notes.
BASSANO DEL GRAPPA
The characteristic “Ponte degli Alpini” (Alpine Bridge), the grappas and the fine production of ceramics are the symbols, which make Bassano world famous.
The wooden Bridge, designed by Andrea Palladio, Ezzelini Castle, the Civic Museum and many noble, frescoed buildings embellish the historic centre.
Evidence of medieval buildings blends with Venetian architecture inside the three boundary walls.
It is a city of art, rich in tradition, and culture by great artists, immersed in a delightful natural setting, which is also known for its vibrant cultural life that offers events, shows and great exhibitions every year. Bassano lies in the province of Vicenza, in the Veneto region, to the north-east of Italy.
