WALKS AROUND RECOARO
PATH AROUND THE SPRINGS - km - 4 h - climb 400 m – a relatively long walk up and down over the upper Agno valley, in the basin which surrounds Recoaro, visiting the three main springs away from the spa town. - (medium)
ACCESS The path around the springs begins in the centre of Recoaro, which can be reached from main road n. 246, having climbed up from Valdagno. If parking is required, it is recommended to start from Piazzale Duca d'Aosta, where the cableway station for Recoaro Mille is found. From the centre of the town one can walk down a few hundred metres to take the asphalted road leading to Fonte Franco. From the centre of Recoaro the route takes us along Via Roma up to the bus station. We turn left immediately after the station, taking Via Fonte Franco, which climbs gently up the left bank of the Valle dell'Agno. The road cuts across the slope, exposing the impressive layers of quartziferous phyllite. The instability of the slope resulting from the phyllite is clear on observing the landslide and superficial erosion below the road. Immediately after a sharp bend on the left we enter the Valle del Franco, alongside the park of Villa Lonigo. After around fifty metres we reach the buildings of Fonte Franco, discovered in 1852 by the Recoaro chemist Mario Trettenero and shortly after, the Aureliana spring (1857), both operational in the summer. On leaving the springs we turn back for around fifty metres before taking the path making its way up the slope, beginning directly opposite the entrance to Villa Lonigo.
We make our way through the mixed woods, walking alongside the park of the springs with its conifer trees, until we reach an intersection: here we take the right-hand fork, climbing up gently until we reach an attractive meadow overlooked by the district of Spanevello. We continue along the path until we reach another crossroads, where we keep to the right. Precisely at this point, where a small brook is crossed, it is possible to note the remains of an old fountain. A few dozen metres further on we reach some barns and a fountain. Here we keep to the right and climb up for a few more minutes until we reach Spanevello; a narrow alley which winds its way through the old houses leads us to the main road. On reaching this we turn left continuing between the houses. Following the road, we reach Locre, another place whose name derives from Cimbrian. Having crossed the village and gone past a bend to the right, close to an old rural building, we turn off to the left, taking a footpath which makes its way down to the wood. Having gone past a stretch of landslide and a grassy clearing we reach a crossroads with a small road: here we keep left, continuing down until we reach a wider road. We head down for a few more metres, to turn right at the next crossroads and after having made our way alongside an artificial spruce wood we reach an asphalted road which after a few bends takes us up to Fonte Capitello (discovered in 1815). On the other side of the road after around thirty metres a footpath takes us to an attractive small shrine, known as the shrine of Moses; from here we continue along the path until we reach the centre of Recoaro after about ten minutes.
To reach the third spring away from the town, the Giuliana spring, it is necessary to take the asphalted toad leading to Fonte Capitello. Once we get to the dirt track we continue on for a few metres and then turn sharply to the left, taking a path through the woods which begins precisely where the spruce trees of the Fonte Capitello park come to an end. The path runs in a north-westerly direction between the wood and the areas of grassland until it reaches a junction close to a large chestnut tree: here we turn left, passing by an old renovated barn, keeping to the right and in a few minutes climbing up to the district of Pianalto, in a panoramic position with a view over the whole of the so-called Small Dolomites, Monte Pasubio and the Valle dell'Agno. We then follow the road for around one hundred metres up to Calisarda, where we turn left and begin out descent along a small asphalted road. After a few minutes we reach the district of Gaspari, after which we go past a shrine and shortly afterwards we reach Fiori. At the junction with the road immediately afterwards we go down to the left, taking a wide dirt road; we cross the Valcalda stream, beginning the climb up its right-hand bank along a wooded slope. On leaving the wood we climb up well cared-for meadows to reach the district of Ceola. Once we reach the asphalted road we turn left, beginning our descent to the district of Fonzerga; we continue down, passing in the midst of some attractive chestnut trees and immediately come to the Zulpo district. Having passed through this we come to the steep slopes of the Valle del l'Orco and having crossed the bridge over the watercourse with the same name, we turn off left along a dirt road to reach Fonte Giuliana (1850). On leaving the spring we return to the asphalted road, which runs alongside the steep and wild Valle del l'Orco, after around one kilometre leading to the centre of Recoaro.
