2002: International Year of Mountains The mountains of Veneto

The new holiday guide "Le montagne del Veneto" (The mountains of Veneto), realised by Touring Club Italiano and Promoveneto was presented on Thursday 22 November at the Chamber of Commerce by the President, Danilo Longhi and by Prof. Nadia Qualarsa, President of the Tourism Commission of the Veneto region.
The printing of this handy and effective guide to a certain extent anticipates the initiatives also provided for by the Veneto region for 2002 "International Year of Mountains”.
The guide leads the reader in search of the most picturesque locations in the mountains around Verona, Vicenza and Belluno and is complete with detailed maps and suggestions for hotels, campsites and hostels, without neglecting the opportunities for mountain bike, gastronomic and cultural itineraries and sports activities.
INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF MOUNTAINS
The international conference "Mountain research - Challenges for the 21st century" in 1996 at Bishek, in Kirghizistan, suggested sustainable development of the mountains as the theme for an international year, with the following objectives:
to ensure the current and future wellbeing of mountain communities through promotion of the conservation and sustainable development of mountain areas;
to extend work to raise awareness and increase knowledge of mountain ecosystems, their dynamics and how they function, together with their fundamental importance as a source of assets and services, in particular water supplies and food safety, essential for the wellbeing of inhabitants of the countryside and the cities, of the mountains and the plains;
to promote and publicise the cultural heritage of mountain communities and societies;
to follow the frequent conflicts in mountainous areas with attention and to encourage peace initiatives in those regions.
