VILLA TRISSINO TRETTENERO (1531-38 - Arch. Trissino - Palladio)
Strada Marosticana 6 - loc. Cricoli
Closed
Count Giovan Giorgio Trissino of the Golden Fleece was one of the most erudite Italians of the 16th century. He wrote the tragedy "Sofonisba" following the rules of Aristotele's "Ars Poetic" and the poem "l'Italia liberata dai Goti" dedicated to the Hapsburg emperor Charles V. Between 1531 and 1538 Trissino renovated a Gothic buildin already belonging to the Valmarana family. According to tradition, it was in this period that the nobleman met the "tajapiera" Andrea "fiolo de Piro della Gondola" to whom he gave the name Palladio, taken from the angel described in his poem.
The building is the fruit of the same Trissino's labor, a careful connoisseur of the Roman architecture of the early 16th century. The building's two-floored facade is completed by two lateral towers.
The central section of the facade, marked by si0 ionic pilasters, has three central arches flanked by two round windows and two centred windows at each end.
The piano nobile with si0 Corinthian pilasters is characterised by three niche windows in symmetry with the arches below, while two lateral niches hold statues.
At one time the buiding was encircled by a lush garden full of statues and water-couses. |
