Famous people from Vicenza

It may perhaps seem irreverent to place Antonio Fogazzaro alongside Roberto Baggio: they have nothing in common except the fact that they were born in the Vicenza area and they made the name of Vicenza known to the world through their works or their achievements. This is why we wish to recall them all together, without distinction, other than of a chronological nature, starting with someone who was only adopted by Vicenza, but who was certainly the most important figure, to the extent that his name has become perpetually linked to the city in the definition VICENZA, the city of Palladio:
ANDREA PALLADIO - architect
Born in Padua in 1508, he died in 1580. His real name was Andrea di Pietro della Gondola and he was a master of harmonious spatial architecture founded on clear classicism deriving from Greek and Roman principles. He was very fashionable in France and England, but he realised most of his works around Vicenza, especially buildings in the city and villas in the province.
ANTONIO PIGAFETTA – writer and seafarer
Born in Vicenza between 1480 and 1491, he died in 1534. He was one of only seventeen survivors of Magellan’s expedition, about which he wrote La Relazione del primo viaggio intorno al mondo, considered to be one of the most precious documents about the great geographical discoveries of the 16th century.
One can see the outside of the house where he was born, which still carries the old French motto "Il n'est rose sans espine" (in the town centre - Contrà Pigafetta)
GIAN GIORGIO TRISSINO – man of letters and diplomat
Born in Vicenza in 1478, he died in Vicenza in 1550. He tried to restore classicism in all literary fields. His works include the tragedy Sofonisba, the poem L'Italia liberata dai Goti and the theoretical treatise l'Arte poetica
GIACOMO ZANELLA – poet and priest
Born in Chiampo (VI) in 1820, he died in Cavazzale (VI) in 1888. His most famous works are Sopra una conchiglia fossile and Astichello
FEDELE LAMPERTICO – scholar of statistics, law and economics
Born in Vicenza in 1833, he died in Vicenza in 1906
ANTONIO FOGAZZARO - writer
Born in Vicenza in 1842, he died in Vicenza in 1911. His most important works were Piccolo mondo antico (1895) and Piccolo mondo moderno (1901) set in the Vicenza area, along with Daniele Cortis, Malombra and Il Santo.
GUIDO PIOVENE - writer and journalist
Born in Vicenza in 1907, he died in London in 1974. His works include Lettera di una novizia and Stelle Fredde. He broadcast a popular radio programme called Viaggio in Italia, from which his successful book was taken.
MARIANO RUMOR - politician
Born in Vicenza in 1915, he died in Vicenza in 1990. He was a Minister in various governments and Prime Minister 5 times between 1968 and 1974 (the only person from Vicenza ever to have held this office).
LUIGI MENEGHELLO - writer
Born in Malo (VI) in 1922. His most important works include Libera nos a Malo and I piccoli maestri from which Daniele Lucchetti’s film of the same name was taken.
GOFFREDO PARISE - writer
Born in Vicenza in 1929, he died in Treviso in 1986. His works include: Il Prete bello, from which Carlo Mazzacurati’s film of the same name was taken, I sillabari and Gli americani a Vicenza
ROBERTO BAGGIO - footballer
Baggio was born in 1967 in Caldogno (VI), where he is still officially resident. In 1993 he won the Golden Ball award, the second player from Vicenza to have merited the prestigious award for footballers, after PAOLO ROSSI who lived and worked in Vicenza, although he was originally from Prato.
Despite numerous problems, both physical and linked to difficult relationships with coaches, who have often left him on the sidelines, the role of ROBERTO BAGGIO was decisive in the last 3 World Cups: Italy 1990, USA 1994 and France 1998, albeit among numerous contestants for a place.
For all these reasons, BAGGIO is today, to all intents and purposes, one of the most famous personalities in the world. |
